Description
Faecal sand analysis is used to assess sand accumulation in the gastrointestinal tract. Horses that experience sand colic often have a background of grazing on sandy terrain, overgrazing their pastures, or being fed in a confined area.
For horses identified as being at risk, faecal samples can be collected periodically throughout the year to evaluate sand levels in the gut.
This process involves mixing the feces with water and observing the sediment that settles at the bottom of the container overnight. Due to variations in gut motility, there is a possibility of obtaining a false negative result, indicating no sand in the faeces of horses that may actually have a sand burden. To address this, we provide two testing kits in each pack; if the first sample shows no sand, a second sample should be taken a few days later. Conversely, if sand is found in the initial test, the second sample can be used to reassess the horse after implementing management changes.
