Regular worming has traditionally been the default for cats, but there is a better way: test first, then treat when there is a reason to. That keeps your cat healthy and helps slow the spread of resistance to worming products.

Which wormer should I use?

Your vet or a qualified pharmacist can recommend a suitable product. Different products work against different worms: some cover roundworm and hookworm, some also cover tapeworm, and lungworm is usually treated separately. The right choice depends on which worm your cat has, as well as your cat's age, weight and health.

  • Choose a product licensed for cats and follow the dose for your cat's weight.
  • Do not use a dog product on a cat unless your vet tells you to. Some dog products, such as flea treatments containing permethrin, are poisonous to cats.
  • Kittens, pregnant or nursing queens and cats with health problems need specific advice. Ask your vet.

How often should I worm my cat?

That depends on your cat's lifestyle. Kittens are usually wormed more often than adults. For adult cats, a regular worm egg count can show whether treatment is needed, particularly for indoor cats with little exposure. Cats that hunt, have fleas or share a home with other pets may need testing or treating more often. Your vet can help you decide.

Why test before worming?

  • You treat only when worms are found.
  • You avoid unnecessary medication.
  • You help protect the worming products we rely on from resistance.

After a course of treatment, a follow-up test 10 to 14 days later checks that it worked. See cat worm count results explained and cat care and parasite prevention.
