When your cat's sample reaches our laboratory it is examined under the microscope and the result is added to your account within 24 to 48 hours of the lab receiving it. We email you when it is ready.
What does the report show?
Each parasite the test looks for is reported as either positive or negative. Our standard cat worm count looks for roundworm, hookworm and tapeworm eggs from a single sample.
What does a positive result mean?
A positive result means eggs of that worm were found in the sample, so your cat is carrying it. Talk to your vet about the most suitable treatment for your cat's age, weight and health. Treat the worm that is present rather than worming by routine, and follow your vet's advice on products.
What does a negative result mean?
A negative result means no eggs of that worm were found in the sample, which is good news. It is a snapshot of one sample, though. Worms shed eggs intermittently, and tapeworm in particular is easily missed, so a negative result does not guarantee a cat is worm-free. Testing regularly gives a better picture over time.
Checking that a wormer has worked
If your cat has been treated, a follow-up test about 10 to 14 days later can show whether the treatment worked. Our Feline Wormer Resistance Test Kit is designed for this.
Lungworm results
Lungworm is tested separately because the larvae are shed differently. The three-day lungworm test looks for larvae across three samples and is also reported as positive or negative.
Ready to test?
Collect a sample at home, post it free to our laboratory (Monday to Wednesday) and your result appears in your account within 24 to 48 hours of the lab receiving your sample.
